Merley First School

Healthy Eating Habits

At Merley First School, we are committed to fostering healthy, happy learners. Good nutrition directly impacts a child’s concentration, energy levels and overall well-being throughout the school day. We encourage all parents and carers to partner with us in promoting lifelong healthy eating habits.

Breaktime Snacks: Fruit & Vegetables Only

Mid-morning break is an ideal time for children to refuel. To support steady energy levels, we operate a fruit and vegetable-only policy at breaktime.

  • Reception & Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2): Children receive a free piece of fresh fruit or vegetable daily under the Government’s School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme.

  • Key Stage 2: Children may bring their own healthy breaktime snack from home.

Building a Balanced Packed Lunchbox

If your child brings a packed lunch from home, we ask that it reflects the principles of a balanced diet to give them the nutrients they need for an active afternoon.  Please click here for NHS guidance on packed lunches.

Merley is a Strictly Nut-Free Zone

Merley First School is a strictly nut-free environment. We have children and staff with severe, life-threatening nut allergies (anaphylaxis).

  • No nuts of any kind: Please do not send peanuts, tree nuts, or products containing nuts to school.

  • Check the labels: Avoid items such as peanut butter, Nutella or hazelnut spreads, cereal bars containing nuts, or pesto containing pine nuts/walnuts.

  • "May contain" products: Factory cross-contamination disclaimers (e.g., "may contain traces of nuts") are acceptable, provided nuts are not listed as an actual ingredient.
